> Maricourt High School The Site The art block at Marie Court High School had internal leaks which had damaged the plasterboard ceiling. Following the survey undertaken by Marley Waterproofing, it was found that the original roofing system had been overlaid from its initial installation with an additional layer of cap sheet. However due to
poor original design of the falls to the roof this had only provided
a short term solution to the waterproofing integrity of the roof.
This had resulted in standing water which had drastically reduced
the life expectancy of the waterproofing, and had further caused water
penetration to the roof build up and damaged the insulation. The Solution The contractor, Flat Roofing Systems, put forward the LCMS20 system by Marley Waterproofing for this project to provide a solution to the problem and provide a long term guarantee. Marley Waterproofing provided the specifier, Cunliffe Surveyors with a comprehensive specification service including a newly designed tapered insulation scheme to improve the design falls to the roof with full design details. The re-roofing works were carried out during term time, with pupils and staff using the building as well as the surrounding playground and pathways. Normally, using traditional bitumen membranes on a wood-wool deck would require pour and roll application (flame guns are not suitable for use on wood-wool) it would be necessary to vacate the rooms below in case of hot liquid bitumen coming through any gaps in the decking. The LCMS20 system was ideal for this situation as it does not require the use of hot bitumen. This meant that there was no need for protective measures for a bitumen boiler and no risk to occupants of the school of burns, fumes or damage. In addition, although the works were carried out in the autumn, with low weather temperatures, the LCMS20 system was still able to be bonded and sealed up effectively. The works were
completed on time and on budget. The Waterproofing System LCMS20 is a 2 layer cold applied built up roofing system, which provides the specifier with the ultimate flame free flat roofing system, with a comprehensive 20 year guarantee, covering design, materials and workmanship. LCMS20 has addressed current issues over health and safety and insurance premiums that affect the client, specifier, installer, building users and general public. In addition, current concerns over use of hot works and installation methods have been taken into account. LCMS20 is suitable for both cold and warm roof applications; the result is the provision of a long lasting solution that retains a traditional bituminous build up with a mineral finish. The health & safety risks are at a minimum when installing the system. There is no requirement for bitumen boilers or gas torches and the time spent on the roof is reduced with the provision of pre-formed details. Pre-formed details deliver fast track installation and minimise time spent working at perimeter edges. The specifier and client can be assured that installation is taking place effectively and safely. This is just one element of the system that makes it so flexible. There is also a reduced impact on the environment as the fumes and CO2 emissions associated with hot works will not be present and the noise levels will be significantly lower than when using, for example, gas torches. This creates a healthier working environment for installer, client, building users and general passing public alike. Overall, this system encourages a safer working area for the installer and assists in the reduction of contractor insurance premiums. The system takes into account the design considerations of architects and specifiers and the installation choices of today's contractors to offer a solution that perfectly meets customer requirements for a long lasting roof. The result is the provision of a long lasting solution that retains a traditional bituminous build up with a mineral finish.
