It is important to conduct work in an environment that meets with health and safety requirements.

The Health and Safety Executive states that the main causes of injury are

  • falling through fragile roofs and rooflights
  • falling from ladders, scaffolds and other work places
  • being struck by excavators, lift trucks or dumpers
  • overturning vehicles
  • being crushed by collapsing structures

Ensure that you take the following precautions:

Ladders used for access to the roof should be firmly fixed against movement and extend to project not less than 1m above the landing

Roof perimeter scaffolding should have gangways of correct width and provided with guard rails, toe boards and barriers

Care must be taken with the use of hot bitumen

New buildings must comply with building regulations

Be aware of the CDM Regulations: pre-tender stage health and safety plan
